A Year in Review…
As we begin 2019 and look forward to a new year, we wanted to share a brief summary of our activities and accomplishments from 2018.
2018 was an exciting year for us on many levels. Through the support of our townspeople and town staff, we replaced our fourteen-year-old ambulance, as well as our aging rescue boat. On July 1st, Town Center Station became staffed with two daytime per-diem firefighters, which has allowed us to reduce our response time and provide the staffing necessary to answer calls while our on-call members are at work. Additionally, we began to prepare for arrival of our new aerial apparatus, which will replace our twenty-five year old ladder truck in early 2019.
During 2018 we gained several new members while saying goodbye to several long-time members who moved on for various reasons. We had several members participate in and complete major landmark certifications courses such as Firefighter 1/2 and EMT. We also have multiple members enrolled in Advanced EMT and Paramedic courses for early this year. Each of these courses require a substantial commitment of time, to include numerous hours inside and outside of the classroom.
During the year 2018, we responded to a total of 1047 calls for service, which is a record year for us. This includes over 620 EMS calls for service.
Of these calls for service, we responded to:
- 3 Building Fires
- 3 Chimney Fires
- 14 Motor Vehicle Crashes
- 124 Alarm Activations
- 122 Mutual Aid Requests (South Portland, Portland, Scarborough)
On average, our busiest day of the week for incidents were Tuesdays with a total of 160 calls. We found it to be the busiest between the hours of 10am and 5pm, regardless of day.
As we transition into the new year we look forward to what 2019 has to offer. Our accomplishments would not be possible without the support of our community and the hard work by all of our staff. We look forward to continuing to serve and we are always here if you need us.
